Boxing Results: April 4 at Epic Night Club in Minneapolis

April 4, 2009 · 1 Comment

Results below are gleaned from internet sources.  The match between Cornelius Lock isn’t mentioned in the ringside report from Minnesotaboxing.com and though the bout is listed on Boxrec.com, no result is provided.  So the best guess here is that it didn’t happen.  Joey Abell’s opponent, Galen Brown, was signed on short notice and disposed of in short order.  Harley Kilfian repeated history with his KO of Marty Lindquist.  Ugandan Ismail Muwendo made a successful debut in his new hometown, rocking the always available Felix Martinez in round 2.  Wizened Rocky Graziano defeated novice boxer but experienced MMA opponent Chris Clark in 1.  Jon Schmidt added to his win total with his UD win over familiar MMA face Travis Perzinski, also making his boxing debut.  Charles Meier chalked up his first career win against game Nick Whiting, who was denied again in his quest for a victory.  And two girls fought, with Emily coming out on top of Melissa after five two-minute rounds.  And lastly, if you still hadn’t heard, Willshaun Boxley was denied the opportunity to prove himself against 10-1 Thomas Snow of DC -  Snow was shot on Thursday leaving his gym, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Cornelius Lock (18-3-1 with 11 kayos) -vs- David Vasquez (17-13 with 10 kayos), featherweights, scheduled for 8 rounds

Joey Abell (now 23-4 with 22 kayos) defeated Galen Brown (now 32-11-1 with 19 kayos) by KO in round 1 of 8 scheduled

Harley Kilfian (now 8-2 with 7 kayos) defeated Marty Lindquist (now 13-8 with 10 kayos) by KO in round 3 of 4 scheduled

Felix Martinez (now 0-3) was defeated by Ismail Muwendo (now 2-0 with 1 kayo) by KO in round 2 of 4 scheduled

Rocky Graziano Jr (now 4-2 with 3 kayos) defeated Chris Clark (now 0-1) by KO in round 1 of 4 scheduled

Jon Schmidt (now 8-1 with 5 kayos) defeated Travis Perzinski (now 0-1) by UD after 4 rounds

Nick Whiting (now 0-11-1) was defeated by Charles Meier (now 1-1 with 0 kayos) by UD after 4 rounds

Emily Klinefelter (now 4-0 with 1 kayo) defeated Melissa St Vil (now 0-1-1), by SD after 5 rounds

March 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Word on the street is that the March 21  Seconds Out Boxing/MMA show at the St Paul Armory is postponed.  The Fistic Mystic has no further information at this time, but if true, this is a bitter disappointment both to the fans and to the dedicated athletes who were scheduled to perform.

I’ll let you know as soon as I learn more.  Stay tuned.

March 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

What to watch for: Willshaun Boxley looks to add another stamp of authenticity to his status as a rising prospect when he takes on 10-1 Thomas Snow of Washington DC.  Snow, by the way, is himself coming off a 2nd-round kayo loss to Teon Kennedy.  Cornelius Lock of Detroit continues the talent exchange between that city and our Cities when he faces ringworn veteran David Vazquez of California in a super featherweight bout.  Harley Kilfian and Marty “Wolfman” Lindquist rematch their 2-round battle of last year in a cruiserweight match.  Katy Klinefelter and Melissa St Vil engage in a girlfight.  Ismail Muwendo makes his stateside debut against tough Mexican battler Felix Martinez, and Nick Whiting looks to upset the applecart of Marvin Rodriguez in a bout to be contested at super middleweight.  Word comes late of a change in the card: Joey Abell’s planned opponent, Bernard Brown, has dropped out and been replaced by Larry White, who Abell previously defeated by knockout in round 6 of a 6-rounder in the twelfth fight of his career.

  • Willshaun Boxley (5-0 with 3 kayos) -vs- Thomas Snow (10-1 with 8 kayos), super bantamweights, scheduled for 8 rounds
  • Cornelius Lock (18-3-1 with 11 kayos) -vs- David Vazquez (17-13 with 10 kayos), featherweights, scheduled for 8 rounds
  • Joey Abell (22-4 with 21 kayos) -vs- Larry White (3-4 with 2 kayos), heavyweights, scheduled for 8 rounds

What to watch for:  Phil Williams returns to the prizefighting ring after an injury-forced absence of four months, facing tough Isaiah Henderson, a former IBC Americas cruiserweight titleist.  Joey Abell tests his chin against the strong but very beatable Marcus Rhode.  Caleb Truax faces Josh Rodriguez, who gave a good account of himself in a close loss to Jon Schmidt last month.  Jon Schmidt takes on an interesting opponent in William Deets, whose 2-8 record may be deceptive – check the quality of his competition and you’ll find that Deets has never fought an opponent with less than a winning record.  Note also that Deets is coming off a decision win against Tim Taggart down in Florida.  Willshaun Boxley hopes to capitalize on last month’s big win versus Torrence Daniels by fighting tough puncher Felix Martinez.  Jeremy McLaurin faces a guy with a funny name who turned pro at the age of 36.  Charles Meir and Fred Thomas meet in a battle of the winless.  And Dion Savage, fresh off a spectactular knockout of Jeffrey Osborne Jr on January 24, reportedly is returning to Minnesota for a fight with Marvin Rodriguez.

Phil “The Drill” Williams (9-1 with 9 kayos) -vs- Isaiah Henderson (11-10 with 7 kayos)

Joey Abell (21-4 with 20 kayos) -vs- Marcus Rhode (34-36-2 with 29 kayos)

Upcoming Boxing Event: St Paul Armory on January 17, 2009

January 16, 2009 · Leave a Comment

What to watch for:  John Schmidt headlines a show for the first time, against tough Josh Rodriguez of Davenport, IA.  Joey Abell looks for a win against journeyman Derek Amos, who has shown some power but not much chin.  A couple of MMA bouts then muddy the pristine waters of pure pugilism – let’s pretend that didn’t happen.  Promising newcomer Jeremy McLaurin looks to stay unbeaten versus a guy with a funny name.  Charles Meier and former Mexican amateur titlist Marvin Rodriguez make their pro debuts in the same bout.  Felix Martinez tries to rebound from a loss to Jeremy McLaurin against an opponent to be announced – this fight would have been featured Willshaun Boxley, but Boxley had to drop out because the Mille Lacs boxing commission wouldn’t have permitted him to fight Torrence Daniels on January 24 at Grand Casino Hinckley.  As of Thursday Graziano and Chasing Bear wasn’t finalized, but they may appear on this card if we’re lucky.

Co-Main Event: John Schmidt (6-1 with x kayos) -vs- Josh Rodriguez (4-5 with 3 kayos), super middleweights, 8 rounds

Co-Main Event: Joey Abell (20-4 with 19 kayos) -vs- Derek Amos (15-26 with 9 kayos), heavyweights, 6 rounds

Marcus Levasseur -vs- R.T. Hicks (MMA)

Kerry Vanier -vs- Sam Keigley (MMA)

Jeremy McLaurin (1-0 with 1 kayo) -vs- Josh Jugyham (?-?), lightweights, 4 rounds

Charles Meier (debut) -vs- Marvin Rodriguez (debut), super middleweights, 4 rounds

Felix Martinez (0-1) -vs- TBA, lightweights, 4 rounds

Rocky Graziano Jr (3-2 with 2 kayos) -vs- Emerson Chasing Bear (4-0 with 3 kayos), heavyweights, 4 rounds (tentative, pending approval by the commission)

Upcoming Boxing Event: Sioux Falls, November 28

November 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Boxing fans in southwestern Minnesota have a rare treat this Friday, as a pro boxing card is scheduled to come off in Sioux Falls for the first time in twenty years.  The bout will be hosted at the Sioux Falls Convention Center and is being promoted by Seconds out Promotions.  What to watch for:

  • Coming off back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, Joey Abell hopes to impress with a win against durable and experienced veteran Jason Nicholson.
  • Caleb Truax looks for rounds and experience as he squares off against Larry Brothers, who has done ring time with Anthony Bonsante, Dave Peterson, Gee Cullmer, Anthony Dirrell, and Harry Joe Yorgey.
  • Brian Cohen, last seen in Minnesota winning by TKO at Fortune Bay Casino in August, faces faded veteran Tony Ault in one of the night’s two eight-rounders, though the two fighters’ recent histories tend to suggest it won’t last nearly that long.
  • The notoriously inactive heavyweight Brad Laffin, veteran of six fights in the last five years, meets Quincy Miner in a bout curiously listed at light heavyweights.
  • In what may be the mismatch of the night, heavyweight Ed Perry (12-4-2) is matched against Ed Schomber, possessor of a 3-16 record and an 11-bout losing streak.
  • Jeremy McLaurin of Coon Rapids makes his professional appearance against fellow debutante Felix Martinez of Bloomington.
