Proving once more that he really does have one of the world’s coolest part-time jobs, Maplewood-based boxing referee Nelson has accepted an appointment to officiate the Cristian Mijares-Nehomar Cermeno WBA interim World bantamweight title fight in Monterrey, Mexico on Saturday night.
Noting the swiftness with which the WBA announced his acceptance of the appointment, Nelson marvelled: “I accepted [the job] two hours ago and they already posted it. I can’t believe it. In two hours they made my flight and I am all ready to go.”
The show in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico is promoted by Ignacio Huizar of KO Entertainment. No word on whether the fights will be televised in the US. Mijares (36-5-2 with 15 kayos) is a former world super flyweight titlist. The fight is a rematch following Cermeno’s split decision win against Mijares last March.
