The Next Big Event in Minnesota Boxing

Caleb Truax

Caleb Truax

Phil Williams

Minnesota boxing fans, the Kolle-Vanda rematch is now history, and it’s time to recommence speculating and anticipating what’s next.

Well, here’s what’s next for Minnesota boxing: emerging prospect Caleb Truax (14-0 with 9 kayos) meets knockout artist Phil Williams (11-3 with 10 kayos) in a 10-rounder on April 23rd at the St Paul Armory.  Officially this is a super middleweight bout, though it’s actually being contested at a catchweight of 164#.  A win would mean something different to each man: for Truax a win against Williams would certify his chin and enhance his credentials to make a run at the Minnesota middleweight champ.  On the other hand, it could similarly enhance Truax’s already-extant option of bypassing the state title and shopping for out-of-state matchups.  For Williams a win would (hopefully) stop the murmurs of retirement and install him as a legitimate gatekeeper for the middle divisions with a remote possibility of moving up.

The co-main event is a heavyweight bout between Joey Abell (25-4 with 24 kayos) and the doomed Iowan (aren’t they all) Josh Gutcher (18-11 with 13 kayos).  Middleweights Jon Schmidt (9-1 with 6 kayos) and Charles Meier (3-1 with 2 kayos) are also scheduled to appear against opponents yet to be named.

But it’s fans of small boxers who should get all tingly when they hear about this show: it’s like a little-peoplebonanza.  Bantamweights Ismail Muwendo (4-0 with 3 kayos) and Antwan Robertson (6-1 with 4 kayos), and featherweight Derek Winston (2-0 with no kayos) have all been announced for separate bouts.  All three of these smallsters are legitimate fighters with legitimate aspirations in this game.  And as of now, all three are on one fight card.

What’s next after this?  More events are developing, so keep checking back for news.
